A Puppy in Wine Country

Monday, February 25, 2013

Life in Wine Country is pretty fabulous…I can’t lie.  Even when I’m having a bad day, or things aren’t going my way, I stop and remind myself of where I live and tell myself “It can’t be that bad.”

But, even good days need some spicing up…a little excitement if you will.  As if we don’t have enough excitement between our kids, visiting wineries, and soccer tournaments…right?!?!?!

This past weekend we did just that…we put some excitement in our lives…we brought home a new puppy.

cavachon puppy

Isn’t this the CUTEST puppy you have ever seen?  Needless to say, we were under his cuteness spell when we found him.  He seriously looks like a stuffed animal…and is so soft like one too!

Barkley is a Cavachon…A mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Bichon Frise. He is 11 weeks old in this picture, and about 7 pounds.  He is supposed to be anywhere between 15-25 pounds when full grown.  If the size of his paws are any indication, I think he might be at the large end of that scale.

So far, Barkley is a wonderful puppy!  He has such a sweet temperament.  He loves playing with the kids and is extremely curious of our 11 year old German Shepard mix.  However, the 11 year old German Shepard mix really wants nothing to do with this little furry ball of energy flopping around and following him.  It is kind of humorous.  I predict they will be friends in the not too distant future though.

Potty training…Oy…I forgot all about potty training.  On the up side, he has had very few accidents in the house.  Giving a small treat for a reward and praising him excessively when he “pottys outside” has done wonders.  He relishes in the praise from us.

Plus, I made a “potty bell” for him.  If you haven’t heard of those, it is a bell on a string you hang near the door.  You teach the dog to ring the bell when they need to go outside.  After showing Barkely twice how to ring the bell to go outside…he has done it on his own every time!  Smart dog!

So far we are really enjoying the new addition to our family…we are smitten with Barkley!  If you are thinking of bringing home a new furry friend, here is a list of needs for you.  I’m also including affiliate links for easy shopping convenience. Enjoy!

    1. Oh...picking the name was no easy feat with 4 people weighing in. Really it is the only one we could all agree on. And, I think it fits him quite nicely! Cheers! ~S

  3. Such a sweetie! Happy to hear you are create training, if you have any questions, let me know. I lived for potty pads when he was a puppy so we were able to contain accidents. If he did use the potty pad then we would go outside and put in on the grass so he could learn scent and then give him lots of rewards and cookies.

  4. Too darn cute! We want a puppy just like this or similar. My oldest is scared of dogs, so we have to work on her first. Too cute, and the name fits him.
